DEFINITIONS
Yolk sphere- This is located at the center of the egg. It is large and transparent.
Cytoplasm- gelatinous, semi-transparent fluid that fills much of the volume of cells.
Asynchronous- not synchronized.
Blastoderm- layer of cells formed at one pole of the yolky egg of the medaka.
Embryonic Shield- thickened are of the embryonic blastoderm from which the embryo develops.
Subgerminal cavity- Primitive gut.
Coalescence- merging of genetic lineages backwards time to a most recent common ancestor.
Germinal disc- (blastodisc) disc shaped layer of the cytoplasm formed at the animal pole by the cleavage of a large, yolky egg.
Peripheral nervous system- divided into the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. It is unprotected by bone.
